OSU Summer Session Marketing Program Manager Ali Duerfeldt, pictured above, gives a student a promotional item they won on the prize wheel during OSU Summer Session's Warm Up to Summer event in November.

Ali Duerfeldt is no stranger to the education field. Growing up in a family of educators and married to a high school teacher, Ali enjoys giving back to students by helping to provide a positive, successful and life-changing college experience. In her role as the marketing program manager for Oregon State Summer Session, Ali works to inform students of the opportunities available to them during summer at OSU. She previously served on the outreach team as a membership coordinator for the OSU Department of Recreational Sports, where she also has experience working as a sports and special programs coordinator. Prior to Oregon State, Ali served as an admissions counselor and director of alumni projects in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and director of student activities in the Department of Student Life at St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, Oregon. She earned a B. A. in Public Relations at Gonzaga University and a Master of Education in College Student Services Administration at OSU.

When did you begin working at Oregon State Extended Campus?

“I began working in Extended Campus in July 2016.”

What excited you about the opportunity to work for OSU Extended Campus/Summer Session?

“I was excited to work for OSU Extended Campus because of the innovating, pioneering spirit of the division. The landscape of higher education is constantly changing and I know that the Division of Extended Campus is dedicated to creating unique opportunities for the campus community - in Corvallis, and across the world - to advance their education and achieve a world-class degree.”

“I am passionate about serving students in the higher education setting and facilitating transformational learning opportunities and student success,” says Ali, who comes from a family of educators.

Describe what you do in your role.

“I work as a member of the Marketing and Enrollment Services team to promote the Summer Session program. I manage all marketing and communication tactics and cultivate partnerships across campus to ensure all members of our community are aware of the benefits of summer at Oregon State.”   

What do you like most about your job?

“What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to provide vital and important information to target audiences on campus and in our community. I love the opportunities I have to share with students, parents, community members and other stakeholders about the importance summer can play in a student’s success at OSU.” 

What do you wish others knew about your job?

“What I wish others knew about my job is that promoting summer at Oregon State is a year-round job! Students begin to map out their academic plan with advisors at their first academic advising appointment in fall, and it is important that students and advisors know how summer might play a role in a student’s academic pathway.”

What made you decide to get into this field?

“I am passionate about serving students in the higher education setting and facilitating transformational learning opportunities and student success. I was privileged to have a college experience where mentors challenged and supported me to create my own story of success, and I wanted the opportunity to give back to students and help them have a positive, successful and life-changing college experience. Additionally, education and serving the community is core to my identity. My father was an early childhood teacher for 34 years, my husband is a high school teacher and my in-laws were both educators in Oregon. I feel called to serve students, especially those who are from historically underrepresented groups, and support them in their pursuits of an education.”

What do you believe is your greatest accomplishment in this position?

“I am not sure what my greatest accomplishment is, but what I wish to accomplish and the legacy that I hope to leave is that because of my work, students learned about summer at Oregon State as a resource for them to help them move toward graduation.” 

What advice would you like to give to students, staff, faculty?

“Advice that I would give to students, faculty and staff is that summer at Oregon State is different – in the best of ways. Summer provides you so many unique opportunities to help you stay on track to graduation. Summer can be a critical partner in helping students achieve success and move them toward graduation. Plus, that sweet Corvallis sunshine shouldn’t be missed!” 

What is one surprising thing about you that not many people know?

“Growing up, I was part of a competitive, traveling jump rope team, which would travel throughout Oregon and Washington. To this day, I can still perform some of my jump rope tricks!”

What are your favorite activities outside of work?

“I enjoy running, yoga, attending OSU sporting events, cheering on the Corvallis High School basketball teams and spending time with my husband, friends and family.”
