Burger contest promises tuition and culinary fame

This summer, we want you to create something that is as much a part of summer as the sun: a delicious burger.

Flat Tail Brewing logoWe partnered with Flat Tail Brewing, one of Oregon's best brew pubs, to host the inaugural Best Burger Contest, giving you the ability to showcase your culinary talents for the whole town to taste.

How does it work? Starting today, you can submit your favorite burger recipe(s) on our website, and then a panel of culinary experts will review all the recipes.

The top five will be tested in a cook-off at Flat Tail later this month. Runners-up will receive a $20 Flat Tail gift card, while the winning burger will be featured on the Flat Tail menu this summer.

The grand-prize winner also will receive a $500 scholarship toward Corvallis-campus OSU classes this summer.

The contest is open now through May 15, so get crackin'.

Move closer to graduation this summer

If you are still trying to determine your summer plans, make sure you carve out some room to take summer classes and make academic progress. Here are five reasons why you should get summerized this year:

Student studying in The Valley Library✓ Graduate on time
✓ Lighten your course load for next year
✓ Take that class you couldn’t get into
✓ Finish a year's worth of foreign language in one term
✓ See why summer in Corvallis is as good as it gets

Check out the summer schedule of classes, which gives you more than 1,300 classes to choose from in more than 100 subjects.

And there are also 400-plus courses offered online via Oregon State Ecampus so that you can enjoy the perks of summer term no matter where you are.

We have four awesome finalists, and we're asking you to pick the winning design. If you haven't voted yet, visit our website now to cast your vote.

All of the candidates are original creations designed by your Oregon State peers. The winning shirt design will also include the OSU logo. Colors are subject to change, so please vote on the design, not the colors.

The winning designer will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward on-campus OSU classes this summer.

Voting is open now through May 9 at 5 p.m. PDT. You must enter your ONID login to participate, and your vote will only be counted once.

It's hard to beat a summer studying on the coast

SeagullIf you want to do something memorable this summer, go spend some time at OSU's one-of-a-kind Hatfield Marine Science Center on the Pacific Coast.

Few places in the country provide the same level of unique, hands-on learning as HMSC in Newport, where one day you might work in a muddy estuary and the next you might rearticulate the skeleton of a marine bird or perform a necropsy on a dolphin.

"It's an incredible experience, one that students probably can't get anywhere else," said Itchung Cheung, the academic program coordinator and head instructor at HMSC. "We have students come from all over the country to take classes here in the summer."
