OSU Summer Session '09

Health Services

Student Health Services

Optimal health and wellness are vital assets of academic success and a positive Summer Session experience. Student Health Services (SHS) provides medical services and health promotion to support individual student well-being and OSU community health.

SHS programs and services are available to students who are enrolled in Summer Session and have paid the quarterly health fee. Students enrolled at OSU the previous Spring Term, but not Summer Session, may access services at SHS by paying the summer health fee.

During Summer Session, medical office visits with a physician or nurse practitioner are offered at no additional charge. Services such as laboratory, physical therapy, pharmacy, allergy and asthma, massage therapy, travel medicine, immunizations and nursing are available for a fee. User fees can be charged to the student's OSU account or may be paid for after the SHS appointment. Some services are provided at Student Health Services @ Dixon, located in Dixon Recreation Center.

The goal of SHS Health Promotion Department is to enable OSU students to gain knowledge and skills and to modify attitudes necessary for making healthy lifestyle choices and behavioral changes. The Health Promotion Department offers a variety of outreach programs on health topics most commonly identified as concerns and/or of interest to students. Individual Health Coaching consultations are also available for issues such as physical activity, tobacco cessation, and alcohol use. Male Advocates for Responsible Sexuality (MARS) offers individual consultations to male students regarding sexual health and sexuality, as well as outreach programs. The AnswerSPOT is an anonymous question and answer site for health-related topics available on the SHS website. Students are also invited to take advantage of the wide selection of health education brochures located on the second and third floors of SHS.

SHS is open during Summer Session from Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding July 4. Select services are available on weekdays, after Summer Session ends and before Fall term begins. The office is closed Labor Day, September 7.

It is strongly recommended that students have health insurance while attending school. OSU Student Health Insurance sponsors group plans that are offered to undergraduate, graduate and international students. Insurance coverage is available for non-students, spouses and dependents who get medical services from community health care providers. Open enrollment is June 22 through July 10, 2009. For more information about OSU Student Health Insurance, call 541-737-7568, email osustudent.insurance@oregonstate.edu or come to SHS Room 110.

SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc., and is a member of the American College Health Association.

Student Health Insurance

OSU offers an accident and sickness insurance plan for students who who are registered at least half-time (six credits for undergraduate and three credits for graduate). OSU requires all international students to enroll in the OSU International Student Insurance Plan. International students must have a minimum of 1 credit for insurance eligibility. The plan provides a comprehensive, low-cost package of primary care, preventive services, and catastrophic and inpatient care.

The health fee and the student health insurance plan cover most expenses at Student Health Services, and many expenses in the private medical community. Summer Session students may apply for student health insurance during open enrollment, June 22 to July 10, 2009. Effective dates of Summer Session insurance are June 22 to September 20, 2009. Students should consider the OSU student insurance plan if they:

• don’t have health insurance
• are covered but underinsured by a parent’s policy
• don’t have health insurance coverage in the Corvallis area
• have a spouse and/or dependents who lack health insurance

Insurance brochures, containing an enrollment form and premium cost information, are available at Student Health Services or online. Premium payment is due by the third Friday of the term or July 10, 2009.

Counseling and Psychological Services

OSU understands that in order for students to do their best work they need to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. Many students encounter challenges that can be difficult to resolve on their own, and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a variety of services to help them address the difficulties they face. These services are designed to help students understand themselves better, find their sense of meaning and purpose, increase their happiness, create and maintain satisfying relationships, improve their academic performance, and make healthy and satisfying career and life choices. We are dedicated to helping students, and to that end provide individual, group, and couples counseling, as well as educational programs, classes, individual consultation services, and referrals to other resources that may be helpful. The staff at CAPS are strongly committed to affirming diversity in a broad sense, and to treating all with dignity and respect.

CAPS services are confidential, and adhere to the highest professional, ethical, and legal standards. CAPS is staffed by counselors, psychologists, and social workers who are specially trained regarding the issues and concerns of college students. Any OSU student who is regularly enrolled in classes and has paid the Student Health and Counseling Fee is eligible for services.

CAPS is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with reduced hours possible during breaks.
