English Language Institute
The English Language Institute (ELI) offers intensive English instruction in an integrated curriculum that includes vocabulary and reading, structure, writing, speaking, listening comprehension, and electives. Beginning June 2009, ELI is becoming part of INTO Oregon State University, a partnering organization for international students.
The academic experience is supplemented by social, cultural, and recreational activities. The American conversant program furnishes an opportunity for at least one hour a week of conversation with native speakers, usually university students. Students at the English Language Institute have the same privileges as regularly enrolled OSU students in the use of campus recreational facilities, library, bookstore, and student health and counseling services.
An Institutional TOEFL, given at the end of the term at no additional cost to currently enrolled ELI students, provides a measure of their proficiency. The English Language Institute also offers a variety of sponsored programs for international groups through its Division of Special Programs. For more information about sponsored programs, please contact Tina Withrow-Robinson at 737-5678.
This summer the ELI DSP will host several special programs, including language and culture programs for international university students and at least one in-service training program for international English language teachers. Participants in these programs normally have weekend home stays with American families and weekly English conversation practice. These activities provide excellent opportunities for OSU students and community members to interact with international visitors.
