Summer Sessions

Summer Session is comprised of over 1,200 undergraduate and graduate level classes, offered during six sessions throughout summer term

Summer Session is one academic term, however it is organized into multiple sessions so that courses can be offered with flexibility. In addition to term length classes (scheduled during Session 1), sessions allow accelerated classes to be offered exclusively over the summer. Each session has different requirements and deadlines; visit the Academic Calendar to learn more.

While the summer calendar lists session dates, it is important to note that:

  • There are four different start dates for summer session courses, depending on the session.
  • There is no "dead week" (pre-finals week) during summer session, as in regular academic terms.
  • Final exams are usually given during the last week of class. Check with your instructor for specifics.

Summer Course Offerings

Summer course offerings are determined by the department or college that schedules those courses. Reach out to subject area contacts for those departments with questions about specific course offerings.

While the content of all summer classes is equivalent to a regular 11-week term, many summer courses are offered in accelerated sessions that last one, three, four or eight weeks. Check classroom meeting times in the course description, as these accelerated sessions typically meet for longer hours than during a standard term.

Course offerings vary based on the session in which they are assigned.

Online summer classes are also available, and are administered via OSU Ecampus

For more information on registration, visit the Registration page.

Class Search Tips and Tricks

  • Visit the Schedule of Classes (classes.oregonstate.edu) to get started. Classes for an upcoming summer term are published by late January of that year.

  • Refine your search. You can narrow your search based on subject, course level (undergraduate, graduate, etc.), days and times offered, instructor and more.

  • Want to see courses by session? Select the drop-down menu for "Session" under Advanced Search to access all individual sessions that last anywhere from 1 to 11 weeks.

  • All course sections across all of Oregon State University's campuses will automatically display. You can further narrow your search by Campus to only see classes offered in Corvallis, Bend (Cascades Campus), Newport (Hatfield Marine Science Center), or Online (via Ecampus).

  • To display open classes (those that have not already reached their enrollment capacity), click on "Show only open classes."

  • Utilize the Scheduler to help you craft your perfect summer schedule. Exclude times that you have commitments, search specific types of courses, and add courses to your cart to make registration a breeze. For more information and a walkthrough, visit the Scheduler Page on the Registrar website.

Other Dates and Deadlines

Session dates, deadlines, and tuition refund schedule information are displayed in the Academic Calendar - dates should be published by February for the following Summer Session.

Registration for all students and all sessions each summer begins on the same day; there is no priority registration or separate registration dates for different sessions.

Each session during summer has its own deadlines for adding, dropping, and withdrawing from classes, as well as for changing grading basis. Carefully note the session for the classes that you register for to avoid missing these important deadlines. Each deadline for the different sessions is listed on the Academic Calendar.

Be sure to register for summer classes early, as some fill quickly and offerings can be limited.

Withdrawal from Summer Session

A student who remains enrolled in a course(s) after the Last Day to Withdraw deadline for a session is responsible for completing the course(s) in that session or must petition to withdraw late from individual course(s). This petition can be completed by submitting a Petition for a Late Change of Registration form.

A student who has dropped/withdrawn from all Summer session courses in accordance with posted deadlines will be considered as having withdrawn from the term. Term withdrawal processing will be completed by the Office of the Registrar at the conclusion of the Summer term.

For more information on how withdrawal can alter financial aid disbursements, please visit the Office of Financial Aid Withdrawal Information page.

NOTE: Students who withdraw from the University for the Summer Session will receive W grades in ALL Summer Session courses that have not been completed.

For more information visit the Withdraw from the Term page on the Office of the Registrar website.
